I am not worthy to untie the strap of his sandals.
He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
(His winnowing-fork is in his hand,

but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”) Luke 3:16, 17

Prayer for Wholeness

God of the future:
Our world is ending.
Our little world of ego and selfishness,
in which we think we are separate from others.
Our little world of tribe and class,
in which we think we are in competition with others.
Our little world of nations and races,
in which we think we are at war with others.
Our little world of religion,
in which we think we are better than others.
We await the birth of your Christ,
who shows is there are no “others,”
for to him all live as one.
Christ our life, Christ our heart,
Christ our breath, Christ our soul.
Our world is ending;
Your world is being born!
Alleluia! PfR
Amen.

Lighting the Advent Candles

We light these candles
as a sign of the coming light of Christ.
Advent means coming.

We light the first Advent candle.

All Sundays:

We are preparing ourselves for the days
when nations shall beat their swords into plowshares,
and their spears into pruning hooks;
Nation shall not lift up sword against nation,
neither shall they learn war any more.        Isaiah 2:4

Second, Third, and Fourth Sundays:

The wolf shall lie down with the lamb,
the leopard shall lie down with the kid,
The calf and the lion and the fatling together,
and a little child shall lead them.   Isaiah 11:6

Third and Fourth Sundays:

The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad,
the desert shall rejoice and blossom;
Like the crocus it shall blossom abundantly,
and rejoice with joy and singing.      Isaiah 35:1

Fourth Sunday:

The Lord will give you a sign:
Look, the young woman is with child
and shall bear a son,
and shall name him Immanuel:
God Is With Us. Isaiah 9:2

Invitation to the Lord’s Table

This is the holy meal of the future
in which we share now
in the life of the One-Who-Is-to-Come,
Jesus Christ, Emmanuel, God-with-us.
It is a foretaste of his coming to make all things new.
It is a sign of the way God transforms us from within.
In this sacrament
the One who becomes flesh to dwell among us
becomes our flesh,
and we become him,
sharing in the divine nature. PfR

This is the Lord’s table.
Our Savior invites all those who trust in him
to share in the feast which he has prepared.
All are welcome at this table.

Opening Dialogue

The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them up to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Communion Preface

Through the words of the prophets
you promised your people the Redeemer,
and gave hope for the day when justice shall roll down like waters,
and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.
We rejoice that in Jesus Christ, your Son,
the Savior has come
and that he will come again in power and glory
to make all things new. BCW

Sanctus

And so we join our voices
with those of all your people
in every time and place,
in the angels’ song of praise to you:

Holy, holy, holy Lord
God of power and might.
Heaven and earth are full of your glory
Hosanna in the highest!
Blessed is he,
O blessed is he
who comes in the name of the Lord!
Hosanna in the highest!
Hosanna in the highest!

Eucharistic Prayer

We give you thanks, O God,
through your beloved Servant, Jesus Christ,
whom you have sent in these last times
as savior and redeemer,
and messenger of your will.
He is your Word,
inseparable from you,
through whom you made all things
and in whom you take delight.
You sent him from heaven into the Virgin’s womb,
where he was conceived, and took flesh.
Born of Mary by the power of the Holy Spirit,
he was revealed as your Son.
In fulfillment of your will
he stretched out his hands in suffering
to release from suffering those who place their trust in you,
and so won for you a holy people.
He freely accepted the death to which he was handed over,
in order to destroy death
and to shatter the chains of the evil one;
to trample underfoot the powers of hell
and to lead the righteous into light;
to fix the boundaries of death
and to manifest the resurrection.

And so he took bread, gave thanks to you,
and said: “Take, and eat;
this is my body, broken for you.”
In the same way he took the cup, saying:
“This is my blood, shed for you.
When you do this, do it for the remembrance of me.”

Remembering therefore his death and resurrection,
we set before you this bread and cup,
thankful that you have counted us worthy
to stand in your presence
and serve you as your priestly people.

We ask you to send your Holy Spirit
upon the offering of the holy church.
Gather into one all who share these holy mysteries,
filling them with the Holy Spirit
and confirming their faith in the truth,
that together we may praise you and give you glory,
through your Servant, Jesus Christ.
Through him all glory and honor are yours, almighty Father,
with the Holy Spirit in the holy church,
now and forever.            Hippolytus of Rome

O God,
like a mother-bird feeding her chicks,
so our mouths are open to receive you.
And so we are bold to pray in the words Jesus taught us,
saying: Our Father….

The Holy Communion of the People of God

With hearts trusting in an awesome God,
come to the Table.
Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.
Receive the Body of Christ:
taste the fountain of immortality.
Alleluia!  Alleluia!  Alleluia! Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom

The people come to the Table to share in Christ’s body and blood by intinction:
taking a piece of bread, dipping it into the cup, and eating it.
TF Those who wish to pray with the pastor before or after communion
may meet with him to the side.

May the Body and Blood of Christ our God bring you to everlasting life.

Communion Music

Closing Prayer

God of abundance and hope:
even as we wait for the fulfillment of your creation,
you meet us in Christ at this table, in this meal.
We thank you for feeding us with the bread of life
and quenching our thirst with the cup of salvation.
Now send us out into the world by the power of your Holy Spirit
to share your life and salvation with all whom we meet. BCW
Amen.

SENDING

*Charge

12/2

God spoke all these words, saying, I am the Lord your God.
You shall have no other gods before me.
You shall not make for yourself an idol....
You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the Lord your God.
Remember the Sabbath day, and keep it holy.
Honor your father and your mother.
You shall not kill.
You shall not commit adultery.
You shall not steal.
You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
You shall not covet... anything that belongs to your neighbor.         From Exodus 20:1-17

12/9, 12/26

Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.
Blessed are the merciful,
for they will receive mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted
for righteousness' sake,
for theirs is the kingdom of  heaven.
Blessed are you
when people revile you and persecute you
and utter all kinds of evil against you
falsely on my account.
Rejoice and be glad,
for your reward is great in heaven,
for in the same way
they persecuted the prophets who were before you.             Matthew 5:3-12

12/23

O Wisdom,
coming forth from the mouth of the Most High,
pervading and permeating all creation,
you order all things with strength and gentleness:
Come now and teach us the way to salvation.
Come, Lord Jesus.
O Adonai,
Ruler of the house of Israel,
you appeared in the burning bush to Moses
and gave him the law on Sinai:
Come with outstretched arm to save us.
Come, Lord Jesus.
O Root of Jesse,
rising as a sign for all the peoples,
before you earthly rulers will keep silent,
and nations give you honor:
Come quickly to deliver us.
Come, Lord Jesus.
O Key of David,
Scepter over the house of Israel,
you open and no one can close,
you close and no one can open:
Come to set free the prisoners who live in darkness and the shadow of death.
Come, Lord Jesus.
O Radiant Dawn,
splendor of eternal light, Sun of justice:
Come, shine on those who live in darkness and in the shadow of death.
Come, Lord Jesus.
O Ruler of the nations, Monarch for whom the people long,
you are the Cornerstone uniting all humanity:
Come, save us all, whom you formed out of clay.
Come, Lord Jesus.
O Immanuel, our Sovereign and Lawgiver,
desire of the nations and Savior of all:
Come and save us, O Lord our God.
Come, Lord Jesus.
God of grace,
ever faithful to your promises,
the earth rejoices in hope of our Savior’s coming
and looks forward with longing
to his return at the end of time.
Prepare our hearts to receive him when he comes,
for he is Lord forever and ever. BCW
Amen.
